| What is Kilo Lani yoga? The word "yoga" means "union in Sanskrit and "Kilo Lani" means to "reach toward" or "look toward Heaven". Thus Kilo Lani is a "union of the body, mind and spirit with the ultimate goal of reaching heaven (or nirvana). How is Kilo Lani different from other forms of yoga? Their are many different styles of yoga and many are variations on ancient pratices. Kilo Lani focuses on body-alignment while building strength, combined with elements of Tai-Chi and movements from the Hula. As in the Hula, there is an intense emphasis on core strength and placement of the hands. Much of the instruction focuses on breathing while maintaining balance. Will Kilo Lani help me lose weight? Practicing Kilo Lani will build strength and more advanced levels will raise your heart-rate enough to lose weight. However, it is suggested that practioners incorporate a healthy diet and vigorous cardio exercise in combination with Kilo Lani for optimal weight loss. Can men do Kilo Lani? ABSOLUTELY!Kilo Lani was developed by a male, Alika Medeiros, and was created to benefit both of the sexes. Can I do Kilo Lani if I have high blood pressure? Aspects of Kilo Lani (particularly the breathing exercises) are excellent for those with high blood pressure. Certain postures should be avoided, including any handstands, headstands and possible downward dog). Additionally, some postures like the Ali'i, Koa (warrior) and Kamehameha poses should not be held for extended periods. Consult your physician before beginning Kilo Lani or any yoga practice. How many times a week should I do Kilo Lani? Most of the Kilo Lani practices last from 60 to 90 minutes. If you can do that every day -- FANTASTIC! If not try and do that at least 3 times a week. Any time spent is better than none so if you can only practice for 20-30 minutes every day, that is better than 90 minutes once a week. Can I practice Kilo Lani while I am pregnant? As with any yoga, it is okay to continue practicing Kilo Lani while pregnant as long as you were practicing before conception. Kilo Lani is an excellent way to stay fit during your pregnancy. Because of the focus on core-strength, you should avoid compressing the belly area or abdomen. Additionally it might be wise to avoid inverted postures, especially in the later stages. Consult your physician with any questions about doing Kilo Lani or any yoga during pregnancy. Can I practice Kilo Lani while I have my period? If you choose to practice Kilo Lani during your period, it is totally fine. If you choose to practice, avoid inverted poses, extended holding of any pose, abdominal strengthening, or the Aloha breathing for mana (energizing breaths). These practices might interfere with the downward flow or cause discomfort. Can I practice Kilo Lani at home or do I need a class? Kilo Lani classes are available all over North America, however, if you prefer to practive Kilo Lani in the comfort of your own home, there are DVDs for all levels of practioners available through the online store or retailers nationwide. How do I get certified to teach Kilo Lani yoga? Currently all instructors of Kilo Lani go through an intensive training regimen taught directly by Alika Medeiros or a Kilo Lani trainer he has certified.
